How does KidLib operate, and how do I benefit?
KidLib is a software program, tool set and content service that gives librarians and teachers full control over what they want to provide on their Internet screens, in the same way they already control the books and videos stacked on their shelves.
KidLib works by letting students work inside a large knowledge base of secure Web sites under either a KidLib banner or your school or school board's own livery or design.
KidLib does not allow access to sites outside the portal, including public email, instant messaging or chat areas.
Because it is also customizable for premium subscribers, KidLib lets teachers and librarians build their own enriched virtual libraries of Internet resources. KidLib is controlled by a sophisticated software system that completely locks young users out of any inappropriate sites on the wider Web, yet gives them a search experience that is richer than the big engines, because it returns a higher quality of hits.
Can I Customize or Personalize KidLib?
You can choose a number of basic screen geographies and designs, including a basic Dewey setup or curriculum rubrics, or we can work with you to fit KidLib into or under your current library or school pages.
The KidLib program is also completely customizable to your curriculum. This feature lets librarians and teachers add their own targeted and trustworthy sites of interest for student research.
KidLib also features the Photon indexing and search system, which is the fastest way of getting information off the Internet.
Investigate KidLib today - it's a rock-solid solution and a whole new way to make the best use of the Internet in your libraries and classrooms.
Is KidLib a Form of Filtering?
No. KidLib doesn't FILTER the Web. On the contrary, KidLib FOCUSES the Web.
Is KidLib a Form of Censorship?
"The weakness of [filtering] technology is essential to our argument. There are tens of thousands of Web sites that are blocked that don't have anything to do with sex."
- Paul Smith, lead attorney representing the American Library Association (ALA) before the US Supreme Court, Mar 5, 2003.
Librarians are justly concerned with threats to free speech and free access, and rightly fear that filtering programs do not always work. But now there is a third option - a better way to manage access and get peace of mind - KidLib.
KidLib is not cyber-censorship. Unlike the well-known "nanny"-type porn filters on the market, KidLib does not EXLUDE sites that may be valuable, such as educational sites on human biology or reproduction.
On the contrary, KidLib INCLUDES only the best of the Web for students, along with any local or specialty sites you and your children's and school librarians deem appropriate, or that the students themselves recommend.
